Diversity, Equity, Inclusion + Belonging Committee
|
We envision a welcoming and inclusive school community, free of bias and discrimination, where every student can be seen and celebrated for their uniqueness as they grow through their grade school years. |
|
To build a community that respects and celebrates diverse backgrounds, and creates opportunities to build empathy, curiosity, and critical thinking skills that support both academic success and personal well-being.
|
|
We recognize that Happy Valley Elementary is diverse in viewpoints, experience, ethnicity, religion, ability, and background, and that creating a culture of belonging is key to unlocking the potential of our children. When students feel seen, heard, and valued, they thrive academically and socially. This parent-led committee welcomes all parents and caregivers to join our monthly meetings. We will discuss ways to engage our community in our mission of supporting every student. |
Data shows that:
-
Kindness & Empathy: Builds strong relationships and reduces bullying.
-
Curiosity: Encourages lifelong learning and open-mindedness.
-
Respect for Differences: Essential for teamwork, leadership, and civic responsibility. Exposure to and engagement with diverse perspectives boosts critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
-
Resilience: Feeling supported strengthens perseverance.
-
Sense of Belonging & Mental Health: Reduces anxiety and depression. Students are more likely to attend school regularly and engage in class.
